Pixelmator vs. Photoshop: The Lasso Tool

I wanted to believe so badly. I wanted Pixelmator to be a sleek and simple replacement for Adobe Photoshop. But alas. Today I had to revert to using Photoshop yet again.

Photoshop, in spite of it’s clunky and messy interface, has become like second nature to me. I use only a very limited set of tools for creating web graphics and editing the occasional photo, so I was hoping that the shiny and new and beautiful image editor Pixelmator was the magic bullet.

Sadly that is not the case. Pixelmator is too limited - too simple - to be a useful tool. Pixelmator is young and naïve. I hope it will mature gracefully.

Today I was faced with the boring task of making a cut-out and fired up Pixelmator. I selected the “lasso” tool and frantically tried to create anchor points by clicking modifier keys (Alt-Click, Option-Click, Control-Click etc.) Nothing happened. Defeated I finally opened the help file and found this:

Pixelmator Lasso help

Now “Drag to draw a selection” just does not cut it. The Photoshop lasso tool may not be perfect, and I wasn’t expecting the coolness of the magnetic lasso in Pixelmator.

But this. This is too simple.
